A New Lease on Life | 1985 Fiero 2M4 Revival - Part 6

In this episode, I take the GM 2.5L Iron Duke engine and Isuzu MT2 transmission completely out of the car and do not do a full rebuild on them because I am cheap.

  • Hello I am back with another video. I hope you all like it! Do you guys want to hear a secret? Well... I got so freaking tired of all the "see you next year" comments that I have decided to release one video next week, and another one the week after that. They aren't the next installments of the Fiero series, but they are Fiero related. They're a little shorter but just as enjoyable. Okay, Love you all, bye!

  • 31:04 says: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself

  • YES EASY OFF OVEN CLEANER IS A LEGEND AND AN OLD MECHANICS BEST TRICK......it outperforms any and all other engine cleaners including GUNK....not a lot of people know this but its great all the younger people are starting to figure this out....just make sure you use the one that has a caustic odor vs the odor free as its the best of the two...just make sure you use a face mask or respirator while using it and well ventilated area and proper PPE as it will eat thru your skin..

  • Those 80's gear driven cam 4cyl engines were awesome for reliability until people would let a coolant leak cook them or oil leak till dry. No timing chain or belt! Best design ever! Not a HP or Efficiency winner, but would run forever is you keep oil and water where they're supposed to be. You gave that iron duke more love than any before it has ever seen!

  • Love the videos. Love the attitude. One thing. Next time you go that deep into an engine, pull the oil pump, clean it, replace any cheap parts (probably none), clean and inspect pickup, bolt back up. 15 minutes. Just makes sense. Retired mechanic. Not a nitpicker.

  • The Iron Duke is such a low-revving but torquey lump, they DO last quite a while. They were also used in marine applications by Mercury. As an FYI, the valve guides in my early 84 Fiero went bad at 60K miles. Those are worth a change as long as the head is off.

    • I actually haven't touched the radiator or it's hoses at all... Something I probably should do eventually. You might have to loosen both ends of the rubber hose and remove the hose from the metal pipe end first, then from the radiator. I'm not too sure, but it's worth a try!

Slicing trough traffic the torque, close ratio transmission, and surprisingly good visibility made me love that car. Sadly it wasn’t mine. The client I was driving gripped the armrests so hard her knuckles were white-and she squeaked a few times. :) Am loving watching you restore this classic, true mid-engine sports car.

  • 31:04 yes, I have read all the comments on part 4 about using Fram filters. However, any cellulose fiber filter, as this Fram one is, is perfectly adequate for any daily driver. As long as maintenance is kept up with (changing the engine oil and filter out every 3000-5000 miles), these filters will give you no trouble. Synthetic fiber filters are indeed superior in terms the particulate size that they can capture, no arguing with that, but that doesn't mean that these are horrible by comparison. Cellulose fiber filters will always be a solid choice as long as you take care of you vehicle. With that being said, I really do care about what you guys have to say. When it comes time to do the first oil change that happens soon after any engine rebuild, I will swap it out to a higher quality one. Love you all. - Ronnie

  • The shop near me will also do the valves (for more money of course). I rented a spring compressor on the first engine I did and it was such a pain I vowed to never do it again. My favorite project was an 89 Supra. I redid everything much like you did, clutch, head up, alternator rebuild (rebuilding costs about $5!). I did mine because the head gasket broke. Like all the old Supras (they should have done a recall). So I took a chance and upped the head bolt torque when I put it back together. I think the spec was 58 lb ft but I did 65. But the head was crazy, no rocker arms! It used shims. Some were $5, some were $30! I had to make a spreadsheet of all the ones I had and try to reuse as many as possible. It took days to adjust the valves. And I didn't have the special tool so had to remove the cans each pass. I really want a Fiero that a regular human can work on!
