How (Not) to Paint a Car | 1985 Fiero 2M4 Revival - Part 11
When it comes to painting, you definitely want to learn from people who have a lot of experience, so I recommend closing this video and watching literally anybody else.

Hope you guys like the video! I was going to put a plug here and say "If you liked the Fingerprints Workshop shirt with the Fiero on the back that I was wearing, then check out the Teespring link in the description", but I realized I never actually wore it in this video. Whoops.
27:38 the one with the cavities makes me so itchy I need to scratch it
You should sand it all with 1000 wet sand and float coat meaning add 3 more coats of just clear and those little bubbles was solvent pop meaning not even time for the solvents to escape the coat underneath
i do lot of painting jobs before, I suggest to avoid rough and bubbles you better sanding the panels with 2000 grit with water and rinse dry prior putting on clear coat
I do enjoy your videos, looks like alot of hard work. Keep making more if that floats your Fiero.
thanks for the video.
2:06 LOL
Lol, bugs! Where I live its much too cold, there are no bugs anywhere...
I wonder how much it would have cost to have someone paint and clear coat the panels after all of the body work, priming, and sanding had been done. Regardless, the car looks great and one can never overestimate the value of learning by doing.
Great series. I think I watched some of the early videos, forgot about the series for about 2 years, and started up again the last few days. Nice.
Better than Macco still
I learned about negative and positive air pressure when I started building custom cooling options for my and my friends desktop computers. So I saw debris in the paint coming. Filtered positive pressure is ideal.
The finished paintjob in this car, in the end is higher quality than bmw, jaguar, range rover etc.. Can't say other brands, as I have only fixed them.
I don't know why but you look like Arnie Cunningham from 1983 movie Christine lol
Lol! When you said Link in the description, I thought it said “Ink” which would have been a clever pun
I know this is an older video, do you know what the tip size is on your paint gun? Usually you use a bigger tip 1.8 mm for primer as it is thicker. For paint around 1.2 to 1.4 because it is thinner. If you use a large tip on paint, you can get orange peel.
30:06 Ooooh...I felt that. :(
That girl deserves an effing trip to Europe touring five-star spas for a month.
Never even heard of Eastwood till these videos
Holy smokes I’m so glad I’ve stuck around this long. That cinematic bug bomb scene was amazing lmfao.
Great job ronald on the fiero it looks great. Really enjoying this series. Do you know the title of the music that plays while your priming and painting the car thanks.
dude that scream, i felt that. project cars for the win =]
I have to admit seeing that classic Pontiac branding tugs at a place in my heart. A Grand Am drove me all through college and my first job afterwards.
You should write for a dead pan comedy show
Why not put some tubs with water around you? I've heard it's widely used practise.
keep on keeping on
I felt for your pain when the panel dropped eeek. Well done on getting through it. I put this series on hold at ep 5 (as was watching soon as they dropped) but then got so busy with life. It's soooo fun binge watching all of them now though 👊😆 keep up the great work and content.
I love the mustache. You really look like you're from the same period as the car. Can I interest you in an Amiga 1000 computer? Seriously, Ron, you are truly doing an amazing job and your videos are fun to watch. That Fiero is very lucky to have you. It will reward you for it. I felt so bad for you when you knocked over the deck lid and had to repair the corner. [big hugs] Painting a car is NOT something I should do, because my perfectionist nature would make it impossible for me to be satisfied with the results, even if it looks great to everyone else. Painters and upholsterers and body guys are true artists. Let me loose on your engine or your EFI or electrical system, or just get the front end and brakes working properly again. I studied Electrical Engineering in University. My brain is wired to build or repair complex machines. Everything else is a mystery to me. Barter skills - recover my seats and I will re-ring your engine. And remember, we're all in this hell because we love cars and want to preserve them. So, as much as I might not be a Ford guy (Henry Ford was an odious horrible person), I'll do my best to get the 460 engine in your vintage Lincoln to run again without damaging it. And I did, after it sat in a field for over ten years. mnthe.info/bill/video/jpaEmn2uZq6ekKY
Hey Ron - To go further on your very true say about the paint tentbooth - I bet 100 dollars doesn't buy much paint where You are. It sure doesn't here in the UK. Maybe enough for a solid coat on one side of a car like the Fiero. Not that we have Fieros here (only as a grey import) but I'm basing that on a job I did on a little (by our standards!) city car where about that much did base and metallic top plus clear on a rear quarter and the lower half of both doors. So potential for your tentbooth to save WAY more than its cost in paint the first time you use it.
I’ve watched these for too long without subscribing and I am genuinely sorry and that had ended.. TODAY! Love the videos.
I really like your outlook on this project. I too find it difficult to look beyond the imperfections sometimes so find it refreshing when you take a pragmatic view on how far the car has come. Big respect for what you are doing sir!
I actually gasped when that panel fell.
13:28 literally died 💀
Well done man! I've gone through the same story as a youngster myself... except for the video documentary. 👏👏👏
You need to use eye protection.
As long as your happy Ronald, I’m happy.
WRAP THE CAR BRO.
Continuity!!!!
Your bubbles are called "popping" in the industry.
*TO: ALL painters* Wet your floor with water BEFORE shooting paint. You'll thank me later.
"Dish soap is honestly a really good degreaser." Yeah bud, that's literally what it's designed to do 🤣
I got emotional too when the trunk lid fell, pacing around my house 🙉 Such a good series! Can’t wait to see what’s next. Also, you would make a great accountant. You can’t just let things go, like me 😂
11:19 - at this point I was like... well yes if you don't have orange peel or other tiny imperfections and not planning to wet-sand and polish the clear to get it flat (just for record even the best aftermarket paint jobs I seen has some minor issues right out of the booth)... and here we come by 11:59... It is not like you done anything wrong and considering your "paint booth" it actually worked out surprisingly well, but extra layers of clear are generally added for exactly this reason - so that you can remove imperfections and still have decent layer left (which in my opinion are inevitable when repainting the car). I generally of the camp which thinks that "clear coat thickness is the thickness in right place". Not sure what you were referring to when shoving you ventilation set-up, but I thought that what you want in paint booth is POSITIVE pressure. As your tent has plenty of places for air to go out, I probably would have added both fans as intakes at the top of the booth and just let the excess to went through gaps at the bottom. Secondly, I would have added much more water on the floor, it would be ideal to use rubber grate and just make it very wet. Finally, when painting having good light is quite important and I feel at least 8+ "day lights" would have been ideal.
I really love this channel been watching this since you started the Fiero Keep up the good work :)
Your girlfriend watching you paint at 11:10 is goals 😍
Love the 70's porn stache! You will get there, stay after it.
You have done an amazing job with this car and filming it’s restoration at every level! Just ...wow. The only feedback I would give is on the technique with the spray gun whether it’s paint or clear coat. A super common thing that people do is that they do not keep the gun parallel and completely pass over the panel being sprayed. They twist their wrist at the end instead of complete pass over. What this does is change the distance and consistency of how paint hits the edges. This isn’t a criticism, just a little tip for next paint endeavour.
Had the same problem last year with Eastwood medium, 88*. I had to completely redo my hatch. Luckily it was only that. Bought slow activator problem solved. It’s called “solvent pop”. Good job Ronald!
30:00 my heart was so broken.....but i laughed so hard.....keep fighting :D we R with you !!!
Hi, should paint the letters Pontiac on the headlight lit black or white =)
And the Oscar goes to.... keep up the good work and try some acting. You're 👍
I don’t mind the Eastwood promotions. Honestly it just adds to the story like you said, a big established company lending a hand. Also the paint job looks great
I really liked the moment where the table fell, you screamed, and cut directly to fixing it with no words. Ive been learning about....learning how to do things a lot lately. and I think the most important part is recognizing you will make mistakes. its okay to express frustration, but the best way to move forward is to just get to work on fixing things..
Hello ronald When Is the next episode comming out
You're cursed my friend... That's very sad
😳 WOW! driving.ca/pontiac/auto-news/news/the-best-kept-pontiac-fiero-on-the-planet-just-sold-for-us90000
The hood falling I can relate to. Great job!
Even my wife loves watching your series. Great work and creativity. It's refreshing to see that you own your mistakes and don't hide them in any way. Some of them even your fans feel (insert deck fall here). It's awesome you point out its difficult but not impossible for amateurs. Keep it up, we love your edits and sense of humor. Best wishes to you and yours from Ontario Canada.
Where's part 12!
When is the next video?!
I really wanted to see the car 100% done, but really, really like the videos, so a couple more until the end is just fine with me. Good job keeping your head up, a tough life lesson, but an important one.
at the pause, I'm going to guess that you realised that it was meant to be positive pressure in the tent, that way air is pushed out through all the holes, and not able to have dust seep in
When’s the next episode bruh
When are you going to drop a new video of the car painted
Looks very good, your right you can see the imperfections, but you can say you did it on your own. I myself am redoing a 85 2M4, mine is black. it took me 36yrs to get my Fiero. My dream car since its release in 84. The begining of June this year I bought mine. Like i said it took me 36 yrs to get 1 NOW I HAVE 2... I just took delivery of a 1984 1 owner less than 50k miles been sitting in the mans garage for over 22years...that one is red
We want more Ronald. We needs it! We treasures it! We must has it! Please gives it to us. Give us the Fiero. 😎
One of the greatest restoration sagas of all time
Seeing beauty thorugh the... 30:06 ...You made me a, you made me a believer, believer
i have seen a 65 red mustang repainted with spray cans, job was stellar..its what you do when you get your hands on free cans of paint.
Very funny presentation. Cut to 11:08 - check out the window. :(
In this episode we learned that it is a shitty job to clean instead of just painting over it. but it was so worth it.
Paint the rims gold. Paint the black areas of your rims gold. Just a thought for you to process
I think you need to do one of those epoxy garage floors so you can just hose it down and squeegee out the water between paint jobs/projects. That would be a cool video too.
Drop your pants Ronald. Time for us to give you a reward for being so tenacious:
Lmao u look like pew die pie
Been working on cars all of my life. I have/owned four Fieros. What you are doing is something I would never have the guts to do. Painting is whole different level of commitment and patience and I envy and admire your dedication. Nice job. Keep the great work and series.
I’m Earl Scheib, I’ll paint any car for $29.95. Riiiiiiiiight!!
Awesome series. Keep up the good work.
This is one of the best / most satisfying build series out there. And much appreciation for letting others learn from your mistakes!
mnthe.info/bill/video/aKytxozXfa-qa4Q A not so cared for example!
Hey bro, I just wanted to tell you that I have watched this from the beginning and loved it. I am a borderline perfectionist with my work. I do carpentry. Now I'm nobody important but everyone who knows me, knows I am very very particular with my work. And I am very impressed with what you have done. So you can take that for what it's worth coming from some dude. But I just wanna say very well done man. And you're hilarious too. 😂 Keep up the good work bro. love your videos.
I just love your sense of humor. Cracks me up when I least expect it. Thanks Ronald...
Check out "Adventures with Purpose" youtube channel, they just pulled a Fiero out of a river. Spare parts. lol
33:10 it looks like the front hood of a Ferrari F40
30:08 is my life in a nutshell in 2020
Do you follow @UCNTuVMv2WRVnYcgJx7DjNPQ? should check out his new video.
Once again, A great video Ron. I look forward to every one you do. Keep them coming!!!!!
Hey man looks great!
gravity is a bitch some times
How about you just pay a professional to paint it and u put it back together
When I seen the color reveal I gave a woo followed with a "fugg yeah" like I was cheering on a team. Idk whats wrong with me but this is comfy to watch.
When is the next video?
I think the real question we should all be asking is how many bananas it can hold
I know we've all seen the comments, but I'm gonna say it again. I truly envy the people who will find this series when it's done.
Lesson to be learned, dont continue if the first attempt was disastrous. address the issue and then continue.
"...Dad."
The mustache makes you look French for some reason LOL
Painting costs money. Not prepping before doing costs even more money.
Jesus Ronnie, warn us of scenes that might be alarming to sensitive viewers like me. I screamed so loud I scared my kids! 🤣
Ronnie you need some LED overhead lighting in the spray tent to get a good view of the spray object so you can see coverage, IMO.
8:36 - Ronnie Fingers fingers do the talking. LOL. ❤️ it!
At this point this is nothing more than a money grab. Finish it and stop dragging it out.
That Fiero is going to look like a brand new car when you get done with all the work on it.
Love the savage Eastwood promo. Haters can suck it.
My heart broke when I saw that broken corner. One hell of a job man
