Learning to Paint Like a Pro | Saturday Projects

Well, learning to paint like a pro that is really bad at painting. Like, I guess they're not a "pro" in the complimentary way, but maybe still like a "pro" as in professional. I don't know why they would still have a job though if they're bad. Maybe they're self-employed? Or maybe they're blackmailing their employer into letting them keep their job. Either way, I'm painting like them. I'm painting badly.

Remember people Always filter your paint before use, makes a huge difference. You would be surprised how many inclusions are in there. Edit, wow you got much better towards the end, you learned allot.

  • Painting is an art. Obviously, one can learn to do it well enough on an assembly line, but dealing with one-off pieces in a restoration requires real artistic skill. Same for body repairs in general. And the unsung heros, automotive upholsterers who do everything from replacing headliners and vinyl tops to recovering seats. They all have my utmost respect. I used to barter paint and body help for something far more in my league. Suspension is horrible to work on - especially up here in Ottawa Canada where everything is rusty from road salt - but I know how it works and I am good at it. The paperclip on the ALDL trick is showing a 1-3 error code but you just changed the oxygen sensor? Electronics is my real forte, and GM's early TBI systems (like in the Fiero) and Chrysler's Lean Burn system of the early 1980s worked great when everything was new but are hard as hell to troubleshoot especially with 30-40 year old parts that, who are we kidding, Detroit only expected to last 10-12 years. The precision and cleanliness and parts organization required in an engine rebuild suits my nature too... I'd love to try my hand at rebuilding an automatic transmission, but for that I think I'd offer to sweep the floors for a few weeks at a respected local transmission shop and watch the pros put a Mopar 727 or a TH350 back together a few times before I tried one of my own. My Plymouth Valiant got new quarter panels installed because I had a friend who knew a guy who was doing something weird to a Dodge Caravan C/V - the commercial windowless version of the minivan. One day in 1995, this old beat-to-crap 1985 Dodge Caravan, a former telephone company van with the logos faded into the paint, showed up with its wheezy Mitsubishi oil-burner leaving a blue cloud. I went outside and was promptly sworn to secrecy. He opened the back doors and showed me a built Cadillac 500 with a Toronado/Eldorado transaxle connected to the rear wheels. It was so beautifully done that it looked like it might have come from the factory that way. He was driving along on the front engine with the Toronado drivetrain in neutral - "I've got 12 cylinders and I still get 25 miles to the gallon!" So here was the challenge. "Do the electrical to make it run. I suck at electrical." "Yes, Sir!" Oh, I wasn't going to miss out on getting a ride in this automotive debauchery. I did it, and it was quality work befitting of the quality of his rear engine install. Everything looked stock, everything looked like some executive at Chrysler had Presidential-level dementia and authorized the production of Dodge Caravans with naked Cadillac 500s in the back. I was able to find surplus capped toggle switches, the kind jet fighters have with the cover you need to flip up before you can turn them on. Not necessary, but we agreed they were super-cool. That went right to the GM HEI distributor on the Toronado engine. A run of welding cable went from the existing battery to the starter on the Toronado. The starter solenoid was connected to an innocent-looking little pushbutton on the dashboard. The radiator was in the back and turned the damned van into an oven if you ran the Caddy motor more than a few seconds. But a cop looking in the window would have just assumed it was an old Bell truck. The ultimate sleeper. This was racing for pink slips stuff. Brand new Mustang SVO versus oil-burning old Bell Telephone Dodge Caravan with oddly wide rear tires. As the light changed, there was a thunderous roar as the 8.3L Cadillac 500 V8 started blasting out the open headers on the underside of the minivan. Surprise! Low 8 seconds on the 1/4 mile with both the wheezebox Mitsubishi and the Cadillac 500 running. And that was with my lanky ass in the passenger seat screaming and crying. LOL Barter your skills. You'll enjoy the ride. I tell this to all car guys. A car is too complex to be good at everything; just be good at something. Love the machine and be willing to help others. You already do that with your amazing videos about a very unique and wonderful car that is really hard to work on - I know the 4 cylinder Fiero almost as well as you do, you eclipsed my knowledge many videos ago. I kept mine on the road for about 300,000km after I got it for $350, drove it from Chicago to Maine and every inch of the 401, but never went as far to restore that beautiful car as you did. It was not a powerful car and people made fun of me for driving a "hairdresser's car", but it was a pleasure to drive and had no trouble holding 75MPH for as long as I wanted on the freeway. Anyone who can keep a Fiero running is talented and determined and has demonstrated real mechanical aptitude. Your paint looks beautiful. Eastwood really stepped up and gave you some nice stuff, too. I admire what you're doing, and the quality with which you're doing it.

  • You only need to apply bulldog or a adhesive promoter if you are spraying on straight plastic once you have painted it already and then sand it down again it’s pointless to spray it over the sanded painted plastic and you should tack cloth after every coat of paint before clear and use a air blower while you do it to help loosen the trash but don’t go full blast with the air and tack it till you have no color on the tack cloth I’ve been in the auto body field for 15 years and I’m a certified tech and painter your doing good with your attention to detail with out much knowledge of painting and painting is repetition the more you do it the better you get and the faster you’ll get and another thing when putting your first coat on you can do what we call a tack coat a very light coat of base to help with fish eyes and mottle good job on your first car paint job

I had some old craftsman tool boxes that needed restoration I paracticed on them I practiced welding, sanding Body work and then painting on them. I used Rustoleum for them and covered with a clearcoat(Auto quality) After doing 3 boxes that way and going back and fixing mistakes. I then started on the car project. I used Rustoleum because it is cheap and decent and seriously it is a tool box.
