Primer? I Hardly Know Her! | 1985 Fiero 2M4 Revival - Part 10

Well that isn't true. I know her very well. Well, that isn't true either, because the car is a him, not a her. The Fiero is my boy. I love him very much. But, am still going to primim.

    • I actually liked the colour of the primer, it looked nice. If it was mine, I would go for a grey finish, maybe a matte. But that’s personal. I’m sure your happy with your choice. Must be a great satisfaction to have done this yourself. It’s quality work.

    • In the USA, can you not check a car’s history online? In the uk you can put in a plate number, and get a pretty good history(not everything) but a good understanding of when the car needed work.

  • Well, as someone who has zero mechanical and restoration skills and knowledge, I've personally enjoyed every episode I've watched so far. I think you've done an awesome job. It's actually inspired me to try to fix and improve parts of my van, which is nothing like the Fiero was. Only one way to learn it I guess! 😁

  • Your comment at the end, during the cold start of the engine. Yeah, the Iron Duke isn't a really nice sounding engine, it's a long stroke OHV torque monster. The roller lifters (AFAIK, unique to the Fiero, from 1985 onwards) do cut down on the valvetrain noise, and later versions of the Duke had a balance shaft but in a car like the Fiero, some vibration would add to the sporty feel. The timing gears also give the engine a unique sound, especially as the timing gears got older. (Note to ANY Iron Duke owner out there: If the engine is out of the car for any reason, change your timing gears. If the head and the oil pan are off, change your connecting rods. No excuses.) Mine was a 1985 2M4 SE almost identical to yours but silver paint. I remember one time hitting the gas and downshifting to pass someone in traffic; I had the windows down and my exhaust note echoed off the buildings around me. It wasn't like the scream of a Ferrari or other high-revving tiny displacement engine. The engine was running around 2800RPM, so right on the peak of the Duke's torque curve, and the throttle was open pretty far. It was a confident "I've got this under control" kind of burble noise from the exhaust system, a sound of calm power that only American luxury cars with monstrous V8 engines normally get to make. My four cylinder Fiero made that noise, only at certain times and only under load, and every time I heard it, I was impressed by what the Iron Duke could do in the Fiero. Speed demon? No way. Quick enough to be lithe and agile and fun to drive, you betcha. And if you want to hang out on the Interstate at 75MPH all day (or 95MPH if you're flying across Michigan and know the road well), the Iron Duke will happily do that in a 5-speed Fiero. Just shift a little earlier than most people are conditioned to doing; the Duke isn't making any power if it's screaming. Mine never had the Fiero 2M4 decal on the trunk lid. At the junkyard, I found a very tame and dignified silver 2.5 FI emblem off a Chevy Celebrity, and put it on there; it looked like it came from the factory. This was a time when there were still lots of Toyota MR2s driving around with badges bragging about their 1.6L engines. :) Oh, and do yourself a favour. Make sure your upshift light is working. Don't believe it, but it is a very cool 1980s-only artifact. Some times, mine would stay on after a shift, which was part of how I figured out my MAP sensor was bad despite not throwing codes. Also, blinking lights on the dashboard - especially one that is styled after a fighter jet cockpit - are always cool. Any time you take someone for a ride and they've never been in a Fiero before, open the sunroof first. They're already disoriented by how low the the seat is and how weird the car is that it doesn't have a back seat. Turn on the ignition. Don't point it out, but let them hear the fuel pump run and click off. Then start the engine and let them hear the sound reflected by the sunroof and into the car. Even someone who knows nothing about cars will realize they're in a special vehicle, and it takes a special man to keep it running.

I was interested to see that the body panels for each car were all on a jig and painted. Apparently without the car. Goes along with your painting videos I guess. PS love the series. • I have enjoyed all your videos. Compared to some auto restoration projects yours is more real world and that's what is great about it. Not everyone can afford to have a professional mechanic or paint shop take care of things. Your videos show that with time, thought process, knuckle busting, patience, trial and error, you can get stuff done on your own and learn in the process. "Think of it, you rebuilt that Fiero, a process that originally took hundreds of people in a factory to do."

  • I applaud you young man, you have just encapsulated life in just a few words. Not only that but you were able to learn it very young. I’m sitting at 60 yrs in this world and tried my very best to set a time and stick to it. Well LIFE happens, sickness, work, family, home. If you are trying to stick to a time line at work family happens, if you’re trying at home work happens. If it’s not either it’s you that’s happening ( sickness, or something like it). So you are my new hero, I learned it the hard way. Maybe just maybe you just taught many people a great life lesson. I learned a good new thing from the younger generation to “ you do you”. lol, Hell I might make it out of this life a little smarter before I’m finished. This is not a bs session, I’m being straight with you on this. Many never learn this, god knows my father didn’t, and it took a long time for me too. I will say this though never put your family on the back burner people it Will come back to bite you. Best wishes from West Texas. Oh and Houston’s gotta be hell doing a paint job in the summer with the humidity and in a open barn. Anyway good luck looking forward to your next upload.
