We Can Rebuild Him | 1985 Pontiac Fiero 2M4 Revival - Part 12

Rebuilding a car is one of those things in life that actually is very much similar to the time that your friend said that one day you'll fully understand why so many things are how they are and amazing it is to take the time and answer any question with a question, but not this one?

  • After you dropped the trunk lid I've had quiet terror boiling inside me for when something goes wrong. I feel that so much. Just like it's easy to focus on the paint not being perfect, just take a step back and look at everything you've done right not the few things you've messed up unintentionally.

  • The little hole in the head liner is fine. You can take a tiny piece of scrap that was cut away for the sunroof and glue it into the hole. When it dries, rough it up with a brush to blend.

  • I used a hairdryer with the mat judiciously to get it to bed in a bit better, and fit corners better. That killmat is not an acoustic ATTENUATOR like the original sound deadening material is, it is a material that deadens resonances. Sound will pass TROUGH it (probably a bit of attenuation thru the material, but it really keeps the large panels from resonating. I used this as a base and some jute as the sound deadening (a Lotus Europa - same problems mixing crappy plastic and metal and fiberglass or whatever that plastikak GM used.

  • The frequent dammits and poking that hole in the headliner - I felt that and it's a normal part of restoring something. You're gonna screw up and Murphy's Law is right there watching over you.

  • You know - about that problem with the lock hole and the moisture drain that caused the bubbling and the paint (and primer) to just come off in chunks? See - this is an example of something that makes you so MAD and crazy in the moment - but if you stop and think - it's a BLESSING it happened NOW. Now - when you have all the tools and the set up you need in order to fix it - AND the underlying issues that left that section vulnerable in the first place. Think about it - you're in Texas - and as a native Texan myself - I KNOW about the massive weather, humidity and temperature changes that happen. I believe that bubbling in the paint layers that caused that big chunk to let loose would have happened over time with the underside un-protected as it was. It would've happened more slowly. It might have come off in smaller pieces. But I think it would have happened eventually. But having it just go "POP" Like that all at once? And SHOWING you the actual underlying problem in the process? That's a GREAT thing to happen in the long run! It'll save you SO much heartache and stress in the future!
